1915-16 Afternoon Dress

Chosen for the final year 'Ordinary Lives' project, this was a historical reproduction costume. Working from Janet Arnold's original sketch and pattern from Patterns of Fashion 2, the dress was completed entirely by hand. It was made from cotton organdie and cotton bobbinet. The techniques which are most prominent are the use of faggoting stitch and scalloped edge finished with buttonhole embroidery.

Period underwear including an envelope chemise and under bust ribbon corset were also made to complete the 1915 - 16 costume.

This costume was entered and reached the finals of the Janet Arnold Patterns of Fashion Award. It was presented as part of the Costume Society's 50th anniversary conference at the Victoria and Albert Museum in July 2015.
